CHICAGO, April 25 (Reuters) - Chicago Mercantile Exchange cattle futures ticked up as the session wore on Friday, supported by data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's monthly cold storage report, which measures end of month stocks for items including beef and pork, and the looming grilling season, according to analysts.
CME June live cattle futures settled up 0.250 cent at 208.250 cents per pound.
August feeder cattle futures ended 1.600 cents higher at 294.300 cents per pound. Most other contracts reached life of contract highs during the session.
"The cold storage report was pretty friendly for the livestock market," said Karl Setzer, partner at Consus Ag Consulting.
Setzer noted that frozen beef stocks were up just 1% from last year, and he said, "We're sitting right in front of the grilling season," when demand for beef typically rises in the United States.
With cattle supplies for slaughter operations still tight, packers continued to face losses - estimated at $137.50 per head of cattle on Friday, compared with losses of $94.55 a week ago, according to livestock marketing advisory service HedgersEdge.com.
In the wholesale beef market, choice cuts of boxed beef rose $2.78 to $336.48 per hundredweight (cwt) on Friday afternoon and select cuts rose $3.76 to $320.11 per cwt, according to data from the USDA.
Setzer said the USDA's cold storage report also provided support for lean hog futures, with frozen pork stocks down 9% from last year.
That helped the market shake off news that China had canceled 12,000 metric tons of U.S. pork shipments amid the trade standoff between the two countries, Setzer said.
CME June lean hog futures rose 1.225 cent at 101.15 cents per pound.
In wholesale pork values, the USDA reported pork carcasses rose $2.18 to $98.04 per cwt on Friday afternoon, while bellies shot up $9.75 to $153.21 per cwt.
