High school seniors sending in their college applications are told to look for the institution that will be the best fit for them, though often times even 17-year-olds are wondering whether a college will help them go on to success.
Many ambitious students are looked to go to the most prestigious school possible, and encounter a huge number of rankings telling them which universities are 'the best'.
However, some have criticized rankings such as the US World and News Report's because it is dominated by pricey private schools that charge $50,000 or more in annual tuition.
An company called CollegeNet has compiled a new ranking and hopes to 'recast the competition for "prestige" around factors that improve access, affordability, and graduation, and that advance economic mobility for students'.
A ranking from CollegeNet has criticized traditional university rankings and listed schools based on their ability to help economic mobility. Above, graduates at the top school, Baruch College in New York City
While old, prestigious schools such as Princeton University (pictured) dominate rankings such as US World and News Report's, the Social Mobility Index finds fault with Ivy League institutions
'Competing around these factors, our higher education system would have clear incentives to invest in ways that promote the public interest,' an introduction to the Social Mobility Index says.
The rankings used a different system of evaluation than rankings such as US World, putting less weight on graduation rates and trying to measure how well institutions educate the those whose family makes less than the national median income of $48,000.
The index also heavily weights how easy it is to pay at different colleges, and says: 'Simply put, a school can most dramatically move itself upwards in the SMI rankings by lowering its tuition or increasing its percentage of economically disadvantaged students'.
While many of the top US World schools have large financial aid policies, but the Social Mobility rankings do not take into account the aid.
The organization says expensive tuition discourages poorer students from applying because they cannot know at the beginning of the process whether they will receive any money.
