People are only just realising that Jonah Hill isn't actually the actor's real name.

In 2022, the 21 Jump Street star filed a petition in Los Angeles to legally change his name, and the change became official in 2024.

04.jpegThe Hollywood actor, 41, was born Jonah Hill Feldstein - but has always gone by his middle name during his career.

Of course, this isn't unusual, with heaps of Hollywood stars adopting stage names during their careers

With Jonah's real handle no doubt coming as a surprise to some, we reveal a plethora of other celebrities who have changed their names... and some of the reasons may surprise you.

In 2022, the 21 Jump Street star filed a petition in Los Angeles to legally change his name, and the change became official in 2024

The actor was born Jonah Hill Feldstein - but has always gone by his middle name during his career.

In 2022, Jonah filed a petition to legally change his name, dropping his family name Feldstein from his moniker, reports TMZ.

The documents stated the Academy Award nominee wants the name he has publicly gone by for years to be his legal name.

Jonah has one sister, actress Beanie Feldstein, whose first names are Elizabeth Greer.

Since then it appears the change has become official, according to legal documents seen by The Blast.

According to the outlet, Hill's petition was granted. The documents now read: 'The petition is granted. Once the proposed decree is signed, it cannot be amended without a new petition to change name.'

Jonah has never spoken publicly about his decision to drop his surname.

However, in one interview with The Guardian, journalist Hadley Freeman asked why he had dropped his birth name.

Hadley wrote in the article: 'This is when everything goes weird and his palpable self-control breaks down. For a full 15 seconds Hill is silent aside from his breathing: it's so heavy, I think at first he's having an asthma attack.'

When Jonah finally responded, he asked: 'Can we just not? Just… don't'

Jude Law =  David Jude Heyworth Law

The Hollywood star, 52, was born as David but is known to everyone as Jude, which is actually his middle name.

The actor previously insisted that no one ever calls him by his birthname, not even his parents, with Jude seemingly being the go-to moniker.

The father-of-seven spoke of his name change recently when addressing the nickname of 'Celebrity Dave' given to him by the paparazzi.

He told the Guardian newspaper back in September: 'I didn't know the paps call me Celebrity Dave! If they do, it's probably because the name in my passport is David Jude as opposed to Jude David.

'No one's ever called me David. My mum and dad called me Jude. It was just one of those odd things they did.'

The Fantastic Beasts star also told how he's not sick of hearing the Beatles classic Hey Jude, adding: 'Not at all. I love that song. Thank God it's such a wonderful song. I have a very personal attachment because it's a song my mum loved, so in truth it reminds me of her.'

He insisted that it was a 'brilliant song' that he's 'glad' to be associated with, joking that people will now sing it when he walked into a room.

Jude switched to his current stage name in 1980s after enrolling in a youth drama group in London.

He told fashion.ie back in 2009: '(I was) assigned to the girls' dormitories and sleeping quarters when I was a teenager and I joined the National Youth Music Theatre.

Matt Hood, Head of Membership at performers' union Equity, said: 'Having a unique professional name (or stage name) is vital for a performer. Your name is your brand and your reputation and having a unique professional name is key to establishing yourself in a highly competitive industry.

'It will be passed on through word of mouth, appear online, on screen and in print. It will be how you are found to be offered work, and how money from royalties and residuals will find you, even after your performing life is over.

'A mother's maiden name or a double-barrelled name is common,' he said. 'Or maybe you're sick of being Boris, and now you can be the Jamie you always wanted.'

Mr Hood explained that there may, in fact, be a declining trend of professional names being used: 'Some people are understandably attached to the name they have used since birth and really want to keep it, even if unwise in terms of creating that unique professional identity.'
